Seeking Refuge with Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith is about seeking refuge with Allah from various evils and afflictions.

Narrated 'Amr bin Maimun Al-Audi: Sa'd used to teach his sons the following words as a teacher teaches his students the skill of writing and used to say that Allah's Messenger used to seek Refuge with Allah from them (ie the evils) at the end of every prayer. The words are: 'O Allah! I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to a bad stage of old life and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishments in the grave'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the importance of seeking refuge with Allah from various evils and afflictions. Sa'd used to teach his sons to seek refuge with Allah at the end of every prayer, as was done by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The words used for this are “O Allah! I seek refuge with You from cowardice, and seek refuge with You from being brought back to a bad stage of old life and seek refuge with You from the afflictions of the world, and seek refuge with You from the punishments in the grave”. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah for protection against all kinds of evil, whether it be physical or spiritual. It also reminds us that we should not take our safety for granted but instead rely on God's mercy for protection against all harm.
