Reciting The Quran With Moderation

SUMMARY: Allah revealed a verse to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to not recite the Quran too loudly or too quietly, so as to avoid being insulted by the idolaters.

Narrated Sa'eed bin Jubair: from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding: 'And offer your Salat neither aloud nor in a low voice (17:110)". He said: "It was revealed in Makkah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would raise his voice with the Qur'an, the idolaters would insult him, the One Who revealed it, and the one who came with it. So Allah revealed: And offer your Salat neither aloud so that they would not insult the Qur'an and the One who revealed it, and the one who came with it, nor in a low voice (too low) such that you can let your Companions hear it, and learn it from you".
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، وَهُشَيْمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ‏:‏ ‏(‏وَلاَ تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاَتِكَ ‏)‏ قَالَ نَزَلَتْ بِمَكَّةَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِذَا رَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ بِالْقُرْآنِ سَبَّهُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ وَمَنْ أَنْزَلَهُ وَمَنْ جَاءَ بِهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ‏:‏ ‏(‏وَلاَ تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاَتِكَ ‏)‏ فَيَسُبُّوا الْقُرْآنَ وَمَنْ أَنْزَلَهُ وَمَنْ جَاءَ بِهِ ‏:‏ ‏(‏وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِهَا ‏)‏ عَنْ أَصْحَابِكَ بِأَنْ تُسْمِعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَأْخُذُوا عَنْكَ الْقُرْآنَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ

This hadith is about how Allah revealed a verse in Makkah instructing Prophet Muhammad not to recite the Quran aloud or in a low voice. This was done so that he would not be insulted by those who did not believe in him and his message. The verse instructed him to recite it with moderation, neither too loud nor too quiet, so that his companions could learn it from him without being disturbed by those who opposed them. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for moderation and balance in our lives and actions, especially when it comes to religious matters such as reciting the Quran. We should also remember that we should never let anyone's insults stop us from doing what is right and fulfilling our duties towards Allah Almighty.
