Sunan Ibn Majah 1836 (Book 8, Hadith 54) #31188
The Virtue of Self-Reliance

SUMMARY: It is better to work and be independent than to beg from people.

It was narrated from Hisham bin Urwah, from his father, that: his grandfather said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'If one of you were to take his rope (or ropes) and go to the mountains, and bring a bundle of firewood on his back to sell, and thus become independent of means, that would be better for him than begging from people who may either give him something or not give him anything'."

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encourages us to strive for independence by working hard. He advises us that it is better for us if we take our own initiative in finding ways to make money rather than relying on others. This teaches us the importance of self-reliance as well as the virtue of hard work. We should always strive towards becoming independent so that we can provide for ourselves without having to rely on others. This hadith also reminds us that even if we are struggling financially, there are still ways in which we can make money without having to beg or ask others for help.
