Sunan Ibn Majah 1845 (Book 9, Hadith 1) #31197
The Benefits of Marriage and Fasting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of marriage and fasting for lowering one's gaze and guarding one's chastity.

It was narrated that: Alqamah bin Qais said: "I was with Abdullah bin Masud in Mina, and Uthman took him aside. I was sitting near him. Uthman said to him: 'Would you like that I marry you to a young virgin who will remind you of how you were in the past?' When Abdullah saw that he did not say anything to him apart from that, he gestured to me, so I came and he said: 'As you say that the Messenger of Allah said "O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding one's chastity. Whoever cannot afford it, let him fast, for it will diminish his desire"'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of marriage and fasting in order to lower one’s gaze and guard one’s chastity. Uthman was speaking to Abdullah bin Masud in Mina when he suggested that he marry a young virgin so that it would remind him of his youth. Abdullah then reminded Uthman of what the Prophet Muhammad said regarding marriage and fasting as a way to lower one’s gaze and guard their chastity. Marriage is an important part of Islamic life as it helps people stay away from sinning by providing them with companionship, love, support, comfort, security, stability etc. It also helps keep people away from looking at others with lustful eyes or engaging in any kind of immoral activities. Similarly fasting helps control desires by reducing hunger which can lead to sinful activities if not controlled properly. Therefore both marriage and fasting are important aspects for Muslims who want to stay away from sinning or engaging in any kind of immoral activities such as adultery or premarital sex etc.
