Proposing Marriage Etiquette

SUMMARY: It is not appropriate to propose marriage to a woman who has already been proposed to by one's brother.

It was narrated from Ibn Umar that: the Messenger of Allah said: "A man should not propose to a woman to whom his brother has already proposed".
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَكِيمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ـ ‏ "‏ لاَ يَخْطُبِ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى خِطْبَةِ أَخِيهِ

We should always strive for harmony in our relationships with others, especially those within our own families. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example of how we should conduct ourselves when proposing marriage; we should be respectful and considerate towards all parties involved in the process.
