Sunan Ibn Majah 1869 (Book 9, Hadith 25) #31221
Marriage Advice from the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad advising Fathima bint Qais to marry Usamah bin Zaid, as he was the best choice among her suitors. He also advised her to obey Allah and His Messenger.

It was narrated that: Abu Bakr bin Abu Jahm bin Sukhair Al-Adawi said: "I heard Fathima bint Qais say: 'The Messenger of Allah said to me: "When you become lawful, tell me". So I told him'. Then Muawiyah, Abu Jahm bin Sukhair and Usamah bin Zaid proposed marriage to her. The Messenger of Allah said: 'As for Muawiyah, he is a poor man who has no money. As from Abu Jahm he is a man who habitually beats woman. But Usamah (is good)'. She gestured with her hand, saying: 'Usamah, Usamah!?' The Messenger of Allah said to her: 'Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for you'. She said: 'So I married him and I was pleased with him'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman named Fathima bint Qais who was proposed marriage by three men; Muawiyah, Abu Jahm and Usamah bin Zaid. The Prophet Muhammad advised her to marry Usamah as he was the best choice among them. He said that Muawiyah was poor and Abu Jahm used to beat women, so she should not choose either of them. Instead, she should obey Allah and His Messenger which would be better for her in the long run. She followed his advice and married Usamah, with whom she was pleased with in the end. This hadith teaches us that we should always seek advice from our elders before making any important decisions in life such as marriage or career choices, since they have more experience than us and can guide us towards making better decisions for our future. It also teaches us that obedience to Allah's commands is essential for leading a successful life here on earth as well as in hereafter.
