Rights of Widows and Virgins

SUMMARY: Widows and virgins have the right to decide for themselves, even if they are too shy to speak.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that: the Messenger of Allah said: "A widow has more right (to decide) concerning herself than her guardian, and a virgin should be consulted". It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, a virgin may be too shy to speak". He said: "Her consent is her silence".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for Women’s Rights; Respect for Boundaries; Listen & Value Women’s Voices

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the rights of widows and virgins. It was narrated by Ibn Abbas that the Prophet Muhammad said that a widow has more right to decide concerning herself than her guardian, and a virgin should be consulted. When it was suggested that a virgin may be too shy to speak, he said that her consent is her silence. This hadith teaches us that women have rights over their own lives, even if they are not able to express themselves verbally. It also shows us how important it is for women's voices to be heard in society, as their opinions matter just as much as anyone else's. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us all to respect each other's boundaries when it comes to personal matters such as marriage or any other decision making process involving women.
