Forbidden Marriage Practice - Shighar

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad forbade Shighar, which is a type of marriage where two people exchange their daughters or sisters without giving any dower.

It was narrated that: Ibn Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah forbade Shighar. Shighar is when a man says to another man: 'Marry your daughter or sister to me, on condition that I will marry my daughter or sister to you,' and they do not give any dower (ie neither of them give other the dower)".

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad taught us that it is forbidden to practice a type of marriage called Shighar. This is when two people agree to marry their daughters or sisters to each other without giving any dower. A dower is an amount of money or property given by the groom to the bride as part of the marriage agreement. This practice was seen as unfair and exploitative, so it was prohibited by the Prophet Muhammad in order for everyone involved in such marriages to be treated fairly and with respect.
