Hereditary Traits in Children

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who was surprised to have a black son, and the Prophet (PBUH) taught him that it could be hereditary.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A man from Banu Fazdrah came to the Messenger of Allah, and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my wife has given birth to a black boy! The Messenger of Allah said: 'Do you have camels?' He said: 'Yes'. He said: 'What color are they?' He said: 'Red'. He said: 'Are there any grey ones among them?' He said: 'Yes, there are some grey ones among them'. He said: 'Where does that come from?' He said: 'Perhaps it is hereditary'. He said: 'Likewise, perhaps this is hereditary! "
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيَّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ امْرَأَتِي وَلَدَتْ غُلاَمًا أَسْوَدَ ‏.‏ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ ‏"‏ هَلْ لَكَ مِنْ إِبِلٍ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ نَعَمْ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَمَا أَلْوَانُهَا ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ حُمْرٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ هَلْ فِيهَا مِنْ أَوْرَقَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ إِنَّ فِيهَا لَوُرْقًا ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فَأَنَّى أَتَاهَا ذَلِكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ عَسَى عِرْقٌ نَزَعَهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ وَهَذَا لَعَلَّ عِرْقًا نَزَعَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from Banu Fazdrah who came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking why his son was born with black skin. The Prophet ﷺ asked him if he had camels, and when he said yes, the Prophet ﷺ asked what color they were. When he said some of them were red and some of them were grey, the Prophet ﷺ explained that this could be hereditary just like his son's skin color. This teaches us that traits can be passed down from parents to their children, just like physical characteristics such as eye or hair color. It also teaches us not to judge people based on their physical appearance but rather look at their character and behavior instead.
