Sunan Ibn Majah 2080 (Book 10, Hadith 65) #31432
Divorce of a Slave Woman

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the divorce of a slave woman is twice and her waiting period is two menstrual cycles.

It was narrated from 'Aishah that the Prophet said: "The divorce of a slave woman is twice, and her (waiting) period is two menstrual cycles". Abu 'Asim said: "I mentioned this to Muzahir and said: 'Tell me what you told Ibn Juraij'. So he told me, narrating from Qasim from 'Aishah, that the Prophet said: 'The divorce of a slave woman is twice, and her (waiting) period is two menstrual cycles"'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic laws regarding marriage & divorce; Treat slaves with kindness & fairness
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the rules regarding the divorce of a slave woman. According to this hadith, if a slave woman is divorced by her husband then she can only be divorced twice and her waiting period must be two menstrual cycles before she can remarry again. This shows us that even though slavery was allowed in Islam at the time, it did not mean that slaves were treated any less than free people when it came to matters such as marriage and divorce. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us to treat all people with respect regardless of their social status or financial situation.
