Making Exceptions to Oaths

SUMMARY: Making an exception to an oath by adding "In sha' Allah" is permissible.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Whoever swears an oath and says In sha' Allah, he will have made an exception".(2)

QUICK LESSONS:
Make exceptions with "In sha'Allah" when making an oath
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a person makes an oath, they can make an exception to it by adding the phrase “In sha’ Allah”. This means that if something happens which is out of their control, then the oath will not be binding on them. For example, if someone says “I swear I will never eat chocolate again” but then they are offered some chocolate and cannot refuse it due to politeness or other reasons, then they can add “In sha’ Allah” at the end of their statement and this means that their oath does not have to be kept in this situation. The Prophet Muhammad taught us that making exceptions like this is permissible and allowed in Islam.
