Making Oaths in Islam

SUMMARY: A person can make an oath and if they wish, they can go ahead with it or not without breaking their oath.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever swears an oath and says In sha' Allah, if he wishes he may go ahead and if he wishes he may not, without having broken his oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making any commitments; Be honest in your dealings; Keep your promises whenever possible; Respect your word; Fulfill your obligations if you choose to go ahead with them after taking an oath .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a person makes an oath, they are allowed to decide whether or not to follow through with it. If the person wishes to go ahead with the oath, then they must fulfill it. However, if the person decides not to follow through with the oath, then their word is still valid and there is no need for them to break their promise. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful when making promises and think carefully before making any commitments as we are responsible for our words. It also teaches us that we should be honest in our dealings and keep our promises whenever possible.
