False Claims and Oaths

SUMMARY: People should not make false claims against others, and if a claim is made, the person being claimed against is obliged to swear an oath.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: "If the people were given what they claimed, some would have claimed the lives and property of men. But the one the claim is made against is obliged to swear an oath".
حَدَّثَنَا حَرْمَلَةُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْمِصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لَوْ يُعْطَى النَّاسُ بِدَعْوَاهُمُ ادَّعَى نَاسٌ دِمَاءَ رِجَالٍ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ وَلَكِنِ الْيَمِينُ عَلَى الْمُدَّعَى عَلَيْهِ

This hadith teaches us that we should not make false claims against others. If someone makes a claim against another person, then the person being claimed against must swear an oath in order to prove their innocence. This hadith also teaches us that we should be careful with our words and think twice before making any accusations or claims about someone else. We should always strive for truthfulness and justice in all matters.
