Sunan Ibn Majah 2329 (Book 13, Hadith 22) #31681
Resolving Disputes with Casting Lots

SUMMARY: When two people are in dispute and have no proof, they should cast lots to determine who should swear an oath.

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that: he said that two men laid claim to an animal, and neither of them had any proof, so the Prophet commanded them to cast lots as to which of them should swear an oath.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for fairness and justice in our dealings with others even if it means having to resort unconventional methods such as casting lots in order to reach a resolution.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about resolving disputes between two people when there is no proof or evidence to support either side. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ commanded them to cast lots as a way of deciding which of them should swear an oath. Casting lots is a form of decision making that involves randomly selecting one option from multiple possibilities. It can be used when there is no clear answer or when both sides have equal claims and neither can prove their case. By using this method, the decision will be fair and impartial since it does not rely on any bias or favoritism towards either party involved in the dispute. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive for fairness and justice in our dealings with others, even if it means having to resort to unconventional methods such as casting lots in order to reach a resolution.
