Sunan Ibn Majah 3277 (Book 29, Hadith 27) #32631
Taking Food from the Sides

SUMMARY: Taking food from the sides of a plate and leaving the middle is recommended as it is where blessings descend.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: "When food is served, take from the sides and leave the middle, for the blessing descends in the middle".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when taking food; Spread out your meal; Be considerate towards others; Recognize blessings coming down on those who are mindful in their actions.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to take food from the sides of a plate and leave the middle for blessings to descend. This means that when we are eating, we should not take all of our food from one area, but rather spread it out so that blessings can come down on all parts of our meal. This hadith also teaches us to be mindful when taking food, as we should not just grab whatever is closest or most convenient for us. We should think about how our actions will affect others around us and be considerate in how much we take so that everyone can have enough. Additionally, this hadith encourages us to be grateful for what we have been given and recognize that blessings come down on those who are mindful in their actions.
