Following Prophet Muhammad's Teachings

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and not giving in to what non-Arabs think.

It was narrated from Hasan about Ma’qil bin Yasar: "While (he) was eating lunch, a morsel of food fell on the floor. He picked it up, removed whatever dirt had gotten onto it, and ate it. The villagers and farmers winked at one another (finding it odd) and it was said: 'May Allah help the chief! These villagers and farmers are winking at one another because you picked up a morsel (from the ground) when you have this food in front of you.’ He said: 'I am not going to give up something I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for these non- Arabs. We were told, if one of us dropped a morsel of food, to pick it up, remove whatever dirt was on it, and eat it, and not to leave it for Satan.’"
حَدَّثَنَا سُوَيْدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، قَالَ بَيْنَمَا هُوَ يَتَغَدَّى إِذْ سَقَطَتْ مِنْهُ لُقْمَةٌ فَتَنَاوَلَهَا فَأَمَاطَ مَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَذًى فَأَكَلَهَا فَتَغَامَزَ بِهِ الدَّهَاقِينُ فَقِيلَ أَصْلَحَ اللَّهُ الأَمِيرَ إِنَّ هَؤُلاَءِ الدَّهَاقِينَ يَتَغَامَزُونَ مِنْ أَخْذِكَ اللُّقْمَةَ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ هَذَا الطَّعَامُ ‏.‏ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمْ أَكُنْ لأَدَعَ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ـ ﷺ ـ لِهَذِهِ الأَعَاجِمِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَأْمُرُ أَحَدَنَا إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَتُهُ أَنْ يَأْخُذَهَا فَيُمِيطَ مَا كَانَ فِيهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَيَأْكُلَهَا وَلاَ يَدَعَهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In this hadith, Maqil bin Yasar was eating lunch when a morsel fell on the ground. The villagers and farmers around him were winking at one another because he picked it up and ate it instead of leaving it for Satan. He then explained that he was not going to give up something he heard from the Messenger of Allah for these non- Arabs. We are taught that if one drops a morsel, we should pick it up, remove whatever dirt was on it, and eat it instead of leaving it for Satan. This teaches us to be obedient to Allah's commands even if others don't understand or agree with them. It also teaches us that we should never give in to peer pressure or succumb to what others think is right or wrong; rather we should always follow our faith and trust in Allah's guidance.
