Fasting with Dates and Water

SUMMARY: The family of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would go a month without cooking and only eat dates and water.

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "We, the family of Muhammad , would stay for a month during which no fire would be lit (for cooking) and we had only dates and water".
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، وَأَبُو أُسَامَةَ عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ إِنْ كُنَّا آلَ مُحَمَّدٍ ـ ـ لَنَمْكُثُ شَهْرًا مَا نُوقِدُ فِيهِ بِنَارٍ مَا هُوَ إِلاَّ التَّمْرُ وَالْمَاءُ ‏.‏ إِلاَّ أَنَّ ابْنَ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ نَلْبَثُ شَهْرًا

This hadith is about the practice of fasting that was done by the family of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). During this time, they would not cook any food but instead, they would only eat dates and drink water for an entire month. This shows us how important it is to be patient in difficult times as well as how important it is to have faith in Allah. It also teaches us that we should be content with what we have even if it may not seem like much. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example of how one can practice self-discipline by abstaining from certain things such as food or other luxuries for a period of time.
