Sahih al-Bukhari 3558 (Book 61, Hadith 67) #3399
Following the People of the Scriptures

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to follow the people of the Scriptures in matters that he was not instructed otherwise, and eventually parted his hair.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Messenger used to let his hair hang down while the infidels used to part their hair. The people of the Scriptures were used to letting their hair hang down and Allah's Messenger liked to follow the people of the Scriptures in the matters about which he was not instructed otherwise. Then Allah's Messenger parted his hair.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for other religions and cultures while still maintaining our own identity .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about following in matters that one is not instructed otherwise. It tells us that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to let his hair hang down like those from other religions, but then he parted it as a sign of distinction. This teaches us to respect other religions and cultures while still maintaining our own identity. We should also be careful when following others, as we should only do so if we are not instructed otherwise by Allah or His Messenger ﷺ.
