Riyad as-Salihin 740 (Book 2, Hadith 14) #37229
The Virtue of Eating with the Right Hand

SUMMARY: Eating with the right hand is preferred and vanity should be avoided.

Salamah bin Al-Akwa' (May Allah be pleased with him) reported on the authority of his father: A man ate with his left hand in the presence of Messenger of Allah , whereupon he said, "Eat with your right hand". The man said: "I cannot do that". Thereupon he (the Prophet ) said, "May you not be able to do that". It was vanity that prevented him from doing it and he could not raise it (the right hand) up to his mouth afterwards. Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Use your right hand for eating

Avoid : Being vain or arrogant

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of eating with one's right hand. It was narrated by Salamah bin Al-Akwa' (May Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of his father. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) saw a man eating with his left hand and asked him to eat using his right hand instead. When he said he couldn't do it, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said "may you not be able to do that". This implies that vanity prevented this man from doing so and as a result, he could not raise his right hand up to his mouth afterwards. This hadith teaches us that we should avoid being vain and instead use our right hands when eating as it is preferred in Islam. We should also strive to practice humility in all aspects of our lives so that we can stay away from any form of pride or arrogance which can lead us astray from following Islamic teachings properly.
