Riyad as-Salihin 921 (Book 6, Hadith 28) #37410
Turning to Allah in Times of Calamity

SUMMARY: When a person is afflicted with a calamity, they should turn to Allah and ask for compensation and recompense. Allah will reward them with something better than what they lost.

Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying, "When a person suffers from a calamity and utters: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. Allahumma ujurni fi musibati, wakhluf li khairan minha (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return. O Allah! Compensate me in my affliction, recompense my loss and give me something better in exchange for it), then Allah surely compensates him with reward and better substitute". Umm Salamah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: When Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) died, I repeated the same supplication as the Messenger of Allah had commanded me (to do). So Allah bestowed upon me a better substitute than him (I was married to Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ). Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of turning to Allah during times of calamities. It encourages us to make supplications and seek help from Him when we are faced with difficult situations. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if we do this, then Allah will reward us by giving us something better than what we have lost. As an example, Umm Salamah was married to Abu Salamah who passed away but she was later married to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ which was a much greater blessing than before. This hadith teaches us that even though it may seem like our situation is hopeless, if we turn towards Allah He will provide for us in ways that are beyond our imagination.
