Riyad as-Salihin 942 (Book 6, Hadith 49) #37431
The Voice of the Dead

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that when a dead body is carried on the shoulders, it speaks and only those who are not righteous can hear its voice.

Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet said, "When a dead body is placed on a bier and men carry it on their shoulders, if he was a pious man, it (corpse) says: 'Take me in haste'. But if he was not righteous, it says to its bearers: 'Woe to it. Where are you taking it?' Everything except man hears its voice. Had a human being heard its voice, he would have surely fallen into swoon". Al- Bukhari.

QUICK LESSONS:
Strive for righteousness in our lives so that when our time comes we can go peacefully without fear or worry.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about death and how it affects people differently depending on their righteousness. When a dead body is placed on a bier and carried by men, if he was a pious man, it will say “Take me in haste” as if to urge them to take him to his grave quickly so he can receive his reward from Allah. However, if he was not righteous then the corpse will say “Woe to it! Where are you taking me?” indicating that they should be careful with where they take him because of his lack of piety. This hadith also teaches us that even though we cannot hear what the corpse says, we should still strive for righteousness in our lives so that when our time comes we can go peacefully without fear or worry.
