Generosity in Bargaining

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to be generous and kind when bargaining for goods.

Abu Safwan Suwaid bin Qais (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Makhramah Al-'Abdi and I procured some drapery from Hajar and brought them to Makkah. The Prophet came and bargained with us for some trousers and we sold them to him. We had a person who weighed the cloth in order to fix the price. The Prophet said to him, "Weigh and add a little to it". Abu Dawud and At- Tirmidhi.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous while bargaining with others; Show kindness towards others; Try to make sure everyone benefits from it; Be fair in all dealings.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of being generous and kind when bargaining for goods. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was known to be a very generous person, and this hadith is an example of that. He was buying some trousers from two people, Makhramah Al-'Abdi and Abu Safwan Suwaid bin Qais, and he asked the person weighing the cloth to add a little extra so that they would get more money for their product. This shows us that we should always try to be fair when bargaining with others so that everyone can benefit from it. We should also remember to show kindness towards others even if we are trying to get something from them in return.
