Riyad as-Salihin 1387 (Book 12, Hadith 12) #37876
The Superiority of Knowledge Over Worship

SUMMARY: The superiority of the learned over the devout worshipper is like the superiority of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over the most inferior amongst us. Allah, His angels, and even creatures like ants and fish supplicate in favour of those who teach people knowledge.

Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "The superiority of the learned over the devout worshipper is like my superiority over the most inferior amongst you (in good deeds)". He went on to say, "Allah, His angels, the dwellers of the heaven and the earth, and even the ant in its hole and the fish (in water) supplicate in favour of those who teach people knowledge". At-Tirmidhi.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of knowledge and learning in Islam. It teaches us that those who are knowledgeable have a higher status than those who are devoted to worship alone. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) compared his own superiority to that of a learned person's over a devout worshipper, showing how highly he valued knowledge. Furthermore, this hadith tells us that even creatures such as ants and fish supplicate in favour of those who teach people knowledge - emphasizing how important it is for us to learn and share our knowledge with others. We should strive to acquire more knowledge so we can benefit ourselves as well as others around us by teaching them what we know.
