Riyad as-Salihin 1392 (Book 12, Hadith 17) #37881
The Loss of Knowledge Through Death of Scholars

SUMMARY: Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes it away by taking away the lives of religious scholars until none are left. This leads to ignorant people becoming leaders and issuing verdicts without knowledge, resulting in them and others going astray.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: "Verily, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it from the people, but He takes it away by taking away (the lives of) the religious scholars till none of the scholars stays alive. Then the people will take ignorant ones as their leaders, who, when asked to deliver religious verdicts, will issue them without knowledge, the result being that they will go astray and will lead others astray". Al- Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Seek out knowledgeable individuals for advice on matters related to religion ; Respect those with expertise in Islamic law & theology ; Be aware of consequences if access is lost ; Follow carefully those claiming authority .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how Allah does not take away knowledge from people directly, but rather through taking away the lives of religious scholars. When this happens, ignorant people become leaders and issue verdicts without any real knowledge or understanding. As a result, they lead themselves astray as well as those who follow them. It is important to remember that having access to knowledgeable religious scholars is essential for guidance in life and that we should strive to seek out such individuals for advice on matters related to religion. We should also be careful when following someone who claims to have religious authority but may not actually possess the necessary qualifications or expertise in Islamic law and theology.
