Riyad as-Salihin 1393 (Book 13, Hadith 1) #37882
Choosing Milk Over Wine

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was presented with two drinking vessels, one full of wine and the other full of milk. He chose the vessel with milk, which pleased Allah and showed that he was guided to what is in accord with Islamic Monotheism.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: On the Night of Al-Isra (the Night of Ascension) the Prophet was presented with two drinking vessels: one full of wine and the other one full of milk. He looked at them. Then he took the vessel which was full of milk. Thereupon Jibril (Gabriel) said: "Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah) Who has guided you to that, which is in accord with Fitrah (ie, Islamic Monotheism; pure nature of Islam). Had you selected wine, your people would have gone astray". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose what is right according to your faith even if it may not be popular or accepted by others around you .

EXPLANATIONS:
On the Night of Al-Isra, also known as the Night of Ascension, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was presented with two drinking vessels; one filled with wine and the other filled with milk. He looked at them both before choosing to take the vessel containing milk instead. This pleased Allah as it showed that he had been guided to what is in accordance to Islamic Monotheism or pure nature of Islam. Had he chosen wine instead, his people would have gone astray from their faith. This hadith teaches us that we should always choose what is right according to our faith even if it may not be popular or accepted by others around us. We should strive for righteousness and stay away from anything that could lead us astray from our faith such as alcohol consumption which is forbidden in Islam.
