Supplicating After Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that when one is making a supplication after prayer, they should begin by praising and glorifying Allah, then make supplications for the Prophet, and then for whatever else they wish.

Fadalah bin 'Ubaid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah heard some one supplicating after his prayer without praising Allah and without supplicating Allah for the Prophet . With regard to him, the Messenger of Allah said, "This man rushed". Then he called him and said, "When any one of you have performed Salat (prayer) and wants to supplicate, let him praise Allah first then glorify Him in the beginning and then he should supplicate Allah for me. Then he may supplicate for whatever he likes". Abu Dawud and At-Tirmidhi.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we are making a du'a or supplication to Allah after salat or prayer, we should begin by praising and thanking Him first. We should also make sure to ask for blessings on the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ before asking for anything else. This is an important part of our worship as Muslims because it shows our love and respect for the Prophet ﷺ. It also reminds us of how much he means to us and how much we owe him in terms of guidance in this life. After this, we can ask Allah for whatever else we need or want in life.
