Supplicating Before Going to Bed

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite a supplication before going to bed.

Hudhaifah and Abu Dharr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah used to supplicate when he went to bed at night: "Bismik-Allahumma ahya wa amut (With Your Name, O Allah, I expire and return to life)". Al- Bukhari.
وعن حذيفة وأبي ذر رضي الله عنهما أن رسول الله كان إذا أوى إلى فراشه قال‏:‏ ‏ "‏باسمك اللهم أحيا وأموت‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏رواه البخاري‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Hudhaifah and Abu Dharr states that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to recite a supplication before going to bed. This supplication was “Bismik-Allahumma ahya wa amut” which translates as “With Your Name, O Allah, I expire and return to life”. This hadith teaches us the importance of reciting du'a or supplications before sleeping as it is an act of worship that can bring us closer to Allah. It also reminds us of our mortality and how we are dependent on Allah for our lives. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us not only in times of difficulty but also in times of ease such as when we go to sleep at night, so that we remember Him always and thank Him for His blessings.
