Riyad as-Salihin 1460 (Book 15, Hadith 53) #37949
Praying Before Bed and Shaking Off the Bedsheet

SUMMARY: This hadith encourages us to recite a prayer before going to bed and to shake off our bedsheets in case something has fallen on it.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "When any of you goes to bed, he should shake off (or dust off) his bedsheet because he does not know what might have fallen on it after he had left it. Then he should recite: 'Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uhu, in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin With Your Name, my Rabb, I place my side (upon the bed) and with Your Grace I will raise it up. If You withhold my soul (cause me to die), have mercy on it but if You let it go (let me live), guard it against which You guarded Your pious slaves"'. Al- Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Recite a special prayer before going to sleep , Shake off your bedsheet .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith encourages us to recite a special prayer before going to bed. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that we should shake off our bedsheets in case something has fallen on it. He then recited the following prayer “Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uhu, in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin” which translates as “With Your Name my Rabb I place my side upon the bed and with Your Grace I will raise it up. If You withhold my soul have mercy on it but if You let it go guard it against which You guarded Your pious slaves”. This is an important reminder for us all that we should take time out of our day for spiritual reflection and protection from Allah SWT even when we are about to sleep. We should also be mindful of what might have fallen onto our beds during the day so that we can keep ourselves safe from any harm or danger while sleeping at night.
