The Responsibility of Writing a Will

SUMMARY: It is the responsibility of a Muslim to have a written will if they have something to bequeath.

'Abdullah bin 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah said, "It is the duty of a Muslim who has something which is to be given as a bequest not to have it for two nights without executing a written will". Al-Bukhari and Muslim. In the narration of Muslim it is narrated as 'three nights'. Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said: Since I heard the Messenger of Allah say this, I have never spent a night without having my will with me.

QUICK LESSONS:
Have your wishes in writing if you have something to bequeath

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of having a written will when one has something to bequeath. It is narrated by Abdullah bin 'Umar and Ibn 'Umar, who both heard it from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Since hearing this, Ibn Umar never spent a night without having his will with him. This shows how important it is for Muslims to have their wills in writing so that their wishes are respected after they pass away. Having a written will also ensures that there are no disputes between family members or other people regarding what was left behind by the deceased person. Writing down one's wishes can help ensure that their legacy lives on even after they are gone, as well as provide peace of mind for those who leave behind loved ones or possessions.
