Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: Seeking refuge in Allah from the inability to do good, indolence, cowardice, miserliness, decrepitude and torment of the grave.

Zaid bin Arqam (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah would supplicate: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-bukhli wal-harami, wa 'adhabil-qabri. I seek refuge in You from the inability (to do good), indolence, cowardice, miserliness, decrepitude and torment of the grave. O Allah! Grant me the sense of piety and purify my soul as You are the Best to purify it. You are its Guardian and its Protecting Friend. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the knowledge which is not beneficial, and from a heart which does not fear (You), and from desire which is not satisfied, and from prayer which is not answered". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about seeking refuge in Allah from various difficulties and hardships that one may face. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to supplicate to Allah for protection from things such as inability to do good deeds, indolence or laziness, cowardice or fearfulness, miserliness or stinginess with money and resources, decrepitude or old age and the torment of the grave after death. He also taught us to ask for piety so that we can purify our souls as only Allah can purify it best. He is our guardian and protecting friend who will always be there for us when we need Him most. We should also seek refuge in Him from knowledge which does not benefit us; a heart which does not fear Him; desires which are never satisfied; and prayers which are never answered. This hadith teaches us that no matter what difficulty we face in life we should turn towards Allah for help as He is always there for His believers who call upon Him sincerely with faith and trust in His mercy.
