Riyad as-Salihin 1497 (Book 16, Hadith 33) #37986
Avoiding Self-Cursing

SUMMARY: We should not curse ourselves, our children, or our possessions as it may be accepted at a moment when supplications are accepted.

Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah said, "Do not invoke curses on yourself or on your children or on your possessions lest you should happen to do it at a moment when the supplications are accepted, and your prayer might be granted". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make beneficial supplications to Allah instead of cursing oneself or one's possessions.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about avoiding self-cursing. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us against cursing ourselves, our children, or our possessions as it may be accepted at a moment when supplications are accepted. Supplications are prayers that we make to Allah asking for something and invocation is the act of calling upon someone or something for help. If we do this and it is accepted by Allah then whatever we asked for will come true. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was warning us to avoid doing this because if what we ask for comes true then it could have negative consequences on us and those around us. We should instead focus on making positive supplications to Allah that will bring benefit to ourselves and others in this life and the hereafter.
