Riyad as-Salihin 1523 (Book 17, Hadith 13) #38012
The Sin of Backbiting and Slander

SUMMARY: Talking about a Muslim in a manner which he dislikes is backbiting, and if the person is not as described then it is slander.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "Do you know what is backbiting?" The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know better". Thereupon he said, "Backbiting is talking about your (Muslim) brother in a manner which he dislikes". It was said to him: "What if my (Muslim) brother is as I say". He said, "If he is actually as you say, then that is backbiting; but if that is not in him, that is slandering". Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Speak positively towards your fellow Muslims even if you don’t agree with them or their actions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the sin of backbiting and slander. Backbiting is when someone talks about another Muslim in a way that they would not like, even if what they are saying is true. On the other hand, slander occurs when someone says something bad about another Muslim that isn't true at all. Both of these actions are considered sins in Islam because they hurt people's feelings and can cause divisions between Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to be kind to one another and to speak positively about our fellow Muslims, even if we don't agree with them or their actions.
