Excellence in Islam Through Knowledge and Understanding

SUMMARY: People who were excellent in the Days of Ignorance can be excellent in Islam if they acquire knowledge and understanding of the religion. The best people are those who had a deep hatred for leadership, while the worst are double-faced people who appear differently to different people.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "People are like ores. Those who were excellent in the Days of Ignorance are excellent in Islam provided they acquire the knowledge and understanding of the religion. You will find the best people in it (Islam) those who had a deep hatred (for leadership). You will find the worst among the people a double-faced person who appears to some people with one face and to others with another face". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith by Abu Hurairah speaks about excellence in Islam through knowledge and understanding. It states that those who were excellent during the time of ignorance, or Jahiliyyah, can also be excellent in Islam if they gain knowledge and understanding of their faith. The best among them will have a deep hatred for leadership, while the worst will be double-faced individuals who present themselves differently to different people. This hadith encourages us to strive for excellence by gaining knowledge and understanding of our faith so that we may become better Muslims. It also warns us against being two-faced as this is seen as one of the worst traits a person can possess according to Islamic teachings. Furthermore, it teaches us not to seek positions of power or authority but rather focus on becoming better Muslims through learning more about our faith instead.
