Warning Against Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) warned against four characteristics that are indicative of hypocrisy.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Prophet said, "Whosoever possesses these four characteristics, is a sheer hypocrite; and anyone who possesses one of them, possesses a characteristic of hypocrisy till he gives it up. (These are:) When he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest; when he talks, he tells a lie; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he quarrels, he utters foul language". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned against four characteristics that are indicative of hypocrisy. These include dishonesty when entrusted with something; lying when speaking; treachery when making a covenant; and foul language when quarreling. It is important to note that even if one possesses only one of these traits it is still considered a sign of hypocrisy until the person gives it up. This hadith serves as an important reminder for us to stay away from such negative traits and strive to be honest in our dealings and speech at all times. We should also remember to remain respectful in our conversations even if we disagree with someone else's opinion or point of view.
