Riyad as-Salihin 1556 (Book 17, Hadith 46) #38045
The Power of Cursing

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that when a person curses someone or something, the curse will return to the person who uttered it if they deserve it, otherwise it will return to the one who was cursed.

Abud-Darda' (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "When a person curses somebody or something, the curse goes up to heaven and the gates of heaven get closed. Then it comes down to the earth and its gates get closed. Then it turns right and left, and if it does not find an entrance to go anywhere, it returns to the person or thing that was cursed; if he or it deserves to be cursed; otherwise it returns to the person who uttered it". Abu Dawud.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think twice before cursing anyone

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when a person curses someone or something, their words have power and can cause harm. It is said that the curse goes up to heaven and its gates get closed, then comes down to earth and its gates get closed as well. If there is no entrance for it anywhere else, then it returns back to either the one who uttered it or the one who was cursed depending on whether they deserve it or not. This teaches us that our words have power and we should be careful with what we say as our words can come back to us in unexpected ways. We should also think twice before cursing anyone as this could bring harm upon ourselves instead of them.
