Warning Against Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: The hadith explains four characteristics of a hypocrite and warns against them.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'As (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allah said, "Whosoever possesses these four characteristics is a sheer hypocrite; and anyone who possesses one of them possesses a characteristic of hypocrisy till he gives it up. These are: when he is entrusted with something, he proves dishonest; when he speaks, he tells a lie; when he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous; and when he quarrels, he behaves in very imprudent, evil, insulting manner". Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the warning against hypocrisy. It explains that anyone who possesses any of the four characteristics mentioned in this hadith is considered a hypocrite. These characteristics are dishonesty, lying, treachery and imprudence. Dishonesty means not being trustworthy when someone entrusts you with something; lying means saying something that isn't true; treachery means breaking promises or agreements; and imprudence means behaving in an evil or insulting manner when quarreling with someone. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned us to stay away from these traits as they are signs of hypocrisy which can lead to bad consequences for us in this life and the hereafter. We should strive to be honest, truthful, keep our promises and be respectful even when we disagree with others.
