Seeking Forgiveness from Allah After Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah after prayer and how to do it.

Thauban (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Whenever the Messenger of Allah finished his Salat (prayer), he would beg forgiveness three times by saying, 'Astaghfirullah' (3 times) and then he would say: "Allahumma Antas-Salamu, wa minkas-Salamu, tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram. (O Allah! You are the Bestower of security and security comes from You; Blessed are You. O Possessor of glory and honour)". Imam Al-Auza'i (one of the sub-narrators) of this Hadith was asked: "How forgiveness should be sought?" He replied: "I say: Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah. I seek forgiveness from Allah)". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah after prayer. It is reported that whenever the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ finished his Salat, he would beg for forgiveness three times by saying 'Astaghfirullah' which means 'I seek forgiveness from Allah'. He would then say a supplication which translates to "O Allah! You are the Bestower of security and security comes from You; Blessed are You. O Possessor of glory and honour". Imam Al-Auza'i was asked how one should seek forgiveness and he replied by saying "I seek forgiveness from Allah". This hadith teaches us that we should always ask for repentance after our prayers as it is an important part of our faith. It also shows us that we should be humble in our supplications as we ask for God's mercy and grace.
