Rights of a Wife in Marriage

SUMMARY: A wife has the right to be provided with food, clothing, and protection from physical and verbal abuse by her husband.

Mu'awiyah bin Haidah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I asked Messenger of Allah : "What right can any wife demand of her husband?" He replied, "You should give her food when you eat, clothe her when you clothe yourself, not strike her on the face, and do not revile her or separate from her except in the house". Abu Dawud, who categorized it as Hasan.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the rights of a wife in marriage. It is narrated by Mu'awiyah bin Haidah who asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what rights can any wife demand of her husband. The Prophet ﷺ replied that a husband should provide his wife with food when he eats, clothe her when he clothes himself, not strike her on the face, and do not revile her or separate from her except in the house. These are some basic rights that every married woman should have access to regardless of their culture or religion. It is important for husbands to remember these teachings so they can ensure their wives are treated fairly and respectfully within their marriage.
