Giving Away Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us not to eat charity, and that it should be given away instead.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Al-Hasan bin 'Ali (May Allah be pleased with them) took one of the dates of the Sadaqah (charity) and put it in his mouth, whereupon Messenger of Allah said, "Leave it, leave it, throw it away. Do you not know that we do not eat the Sadaqah (charity)?" Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give away charity whenever possible.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of giving away charity. It is narrated by Abu Hurairah and Al-Hasan bin 'Ali who both saw the Prophet Muhammad take a date from a charity basket and tell Hasan to throw it away. He said this because we are not supposed to eat from the charity; rather, we should give it away so that others can benefit from it. This hadith also shows us how important generosity is in Islam; even though Hasan was hungry he was still willing to give his food away for the sake of helping others. We can learn from this example that we should always strive to help those in need whenever possible.
