The Etiquette of Eating

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of saying Bismillah before eating, eating with the right hand and eating from what is near to you.

'Umar bin Abu Salamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was a boy under the care of Messenger of Allah , and my hand would wander about in the dish. Messenger of Allah said to me "Mention Allah's Name (ie, say Bismillah before you start eating), eat with your right hand and eat from what is near to you". I always followed this way of eating after this incident. Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the etiquette of eating. It was narrated by Umar bin Abu Salamah who was a young boy under the care of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He reported that one day he was at a meal and his hand wandered around in the dish. The Prophet ﷺ then told him to mention Allah's Name before starting to eat, eat with his right hand and eat from what is near to him. After this incident, Umar always followed these instructions when it came to meals. This hadith teaches us that we should always remember Allah before we start our meals by saying 'Bismillah' which means 'In the name of Allah'. We should also use our right hands when we are eating as this is considered more polite in Islam and it's important for us not to reach out for food that may be far away from us but instead take what is close by so as not to inconvenience others at the table or waste food unnecessarily. These teachings remind us how important it is for Muslims to be mindful of their manners even during something as simple as having a meal together.
