Serving Parents is Jihad

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised a man to stay with his parents and serve them as an act of Jihad.

'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'as (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: A man came to the Prophet of Allah and said, "I swear allegiance to you for emigration and Jihad, seeking reward from Allah". He said, "Is any of your parents alive?" He said, "Yes, both of them are alive". He then asked, "Do you want to seek reward from Allah?" He replied in the affirmative. Thereupon Messenger of Allah said, "Go back to your parents and keep good company with them". Al-Bukhari and Muslim. In another narration it is reported that a person came to Messenger of Allah and sought his permission to participate in Jihad. The Prophet asked, "Are your parents alive?" He replied in the affirmative. The Prophet a said, "(You should) consider their service as Jihad".
وعن عبد الله بن عمرو بن العاص رضي الله عنهما قال‏:‏ أقبل رجل إلى نبي الله ، فقال‏:‏ أبايعك على الهجرة والجهاد أبتغي الأجر من الله تعالى‏.‏ قال‏:‏ ‏"‏فهل لك من والديك أحد حي‏؟‏‏"‏ قال‏:‏ نعم بل كلاهما قال‏:‏ ‏"‏فتبتغي الأجر من الله تعالى‏؟‏‏"‏ قال‏:‏ نعم‏.‏ قال ‏"‏فارجع إلى والديك، فأحسن صحبتهما‏"‏ ‏(‏‏(‏متفق عليه‏.‏ وهذا لفظ مسلم‏)‏‏)‏‏.‏ وفي رواية لهما‏:‏ جاء رجل فاستأذنه في الجهاد فقال ‏"‏أحي والداك‏؟‏ قال‏:‏ نعم، قال‏:‏ ‏"‏ففيهما فجاهد‏"‏‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of serving one's parents. It was narrated by Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al-'as, who reported that a man came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and said he wanted to seek reward from Allah through emigration and jihad. The Prophet ﷺ asked if his parents were alive, and when he replied in the affirmative, the Prophet ﷺ told him to go back home and serve them instead. In another narration it is reported that a person came to Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking permission for jihad, but was told that serving his parents was also considered an act of jihad. This hadith teaches us how important it is for us to take care of our elderly parents or guardians, as this is considered an act of worship in Islam which will bring great rewards from Allah SWT on Judgment Day. We should strive to make our elderly family members feel loved and respected by providing them with all their needs such as food, shelter, clothing etc., while also spending quality time with them so they can feel appreciated for all their hard work throughout their lives raising us up into good Muslims.
