Ways to Show Obedience to Parents After Death

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the ways in which one can show obedience to their parents even after their death.

Abu Usaid Malik bin Rabi'ah As-Sa'idi (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We were sitting with Messenger of Allah when a man of Banu Salamah came to him and asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Is there any obedience to parents left that I can show to them after their death?" He replied, "Yes, to pray for them, to supplicate for their forgiveness, to fulfill their promises after their death, to maintain the ties of kinship which cannot be maintained except through them, and honour their friends". Abu Dawud.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of showing obedience and respect towards one's parents even after they have passed away. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was asked if there is any way a person can show obedience to their parents after they have died, and he replied that there are several ways in which this can be done. One way is by praying for them, supplicating for their forgiveness, fulfilling any promises made to them before they passed away, maintaining ties with relatives who were close with them, and honouring those who were friends with them. These acts are all important ways in which we can continue to show our love and respect for our parents even when they are no longer here with us physically.
