Obedience to Rulers and Fulfilling Obligations

SUMMARY: Obey the rulers and fulfill your obligations, as they are responsible for their own.

Wa'il bin Hujr (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Salamah bin Yazid Al-Ju'f (May Allah be pleased with him) asked Messenger of Allah : "O Prophet of Allah! Tell us, what you command us to do if there arises over us rulers who demand of us what is due to them and refuse us what is due to us". Messenger of Allah turned away from him, but he repeated the same question. Thereupon Messenger of Allah said, "Listen to them and obey them. They are responsible for their obligations and you are accountable for yours". Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of obeying rulers and fulfilling one's obligations. It was narrated by Wa'il bin Hujr and Salamah bin Yazid Al-Ju'f, who asked Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what to do if rulers demand from them what is due to them but refuse what is due to them. The Prophet ﷺ replied that they should listen to the rulers and obey them, as they are responsible for their own obligations while people are accountable for theirs. This hadith teaches us that we should always be obedient towards our leaders, even if we don't agree with all of their decisions or policies. We must also fulfill our duties in order to be held accountable on Judgment Day.
