Sahih al-Bukhari 5372 (Book 69, Hadith 22) #5146
Refusal of Unlawful Marriages

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked to marry the daughter of Abu Sufyan, but he refused as it was not lawful for him. He also refused to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama, as she was his foster niece.

Narrated Um Habiba: (the wife of the Prophet) I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Will you marry my sister, the daughter of Abu Sufyan". The Prophet said, "Do you like that?" I said, "Yes, for I am not your only wife, and the person I like most to share the good with me, is my sister". He said, "That is not lawful for me". I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! We have heard that you want to marry Durra, the daughter of Abu Salama". He said, "You mean the daughter of Um Salama?" I said, "Yes". He said, "Even if she were not my stepdaughter, she is unlawful for me, for she is my foster niece. Thuwayba suckled me and Abu Salama. So you should not present to me your daughters and sisters". Narrated 'Urwa: Thuwayba had been a slave girl whom Abu Lahab had emancipated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Abide by Islamic law; Be mindful about what is lawful & unlawful according to Islam; Follow Allah’s commands over our own desires/wants/likes etc.; Understand Allah knows best what’s good for us in this world & hereafter etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the refusal of unlawful marriages by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In this hadith, Um Habiba asked the Prophet ﷺ if he would marry her sister who is the daughter of Abu Sufyan. The Prophet ﷺ replied by asking if she liked that idea and when she said yes, he told her that it was not lawful for him to do so. Later on in this hadith, Um Habiba mentioned Durra who is the daughter of Abu Salama and again the Prophet ﷺ refused because she was his foster niece which made it unlawful for him to marry her too. This hadith teaches us that we should always be mindful about what is lawful and what isn't when it comes to marriage or any other matter in life according to Islamic teachings. We should never try to do something which goes against Islamic law even if we like or want something very much because Allah knows best what's good for us in this world and hereafter.
