Mentioning Allah's Name Before Eating

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of mentioning Allah's name before eating.

Narrated Wahb bin Kaisan Abi Nu'aim: A meal was brought to Allah's Messenger while his step-son, 'Umar bin Abi Salama was with him. Allah's Messenger said to him, "Mention the Name of Allah and eat of the dish what is nearer to you".
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ كَيْسَانَ أَبِي نُعَيْمٍ، قَالَ أُتِيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ بِطَعَامٍ وَمَعَهُ رَبِيبُهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ فَقَالَ ‏ "‏ سَمِّ اللَّهَ، وَكُلْ مِمَّا يَلِيكَ

This hadith emphasizes the importance of mentioning the name of Allah before eating. It was narrated by Wahb bin Kaisan Abi Nu'aim that a meal was brought to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while his step-son 'Umar bin Abi Salama was with him. The Prophet ﷺ instructed him to mention the name of Allah and eat from what is nearer to him. This hadith teaches us that we should always remember and thank God for providing us with sustenance and nourishment before consuming it. We should also be mindful of our manners when eating in front of others and not forget to say Bismillah or Insha’Allah when starting a meal or snack.
