Serving the Prophet at a Wedding Banquet

SUMMARY: The Prophet was invited to a wedding banquet and the bride served him with dates soaked in water overnight.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd: Abu Usaid As Sa'idi invited the Prophet to his wedding banquet. At that time his wife was serving them and she was the bride. She said, ''Do you know what (kind of syrup) I soaked (made) for Allah's Apostle? I soaked some dates in water in a Tur (bowl) overnight'.
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْقَارِيُّ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا أُسَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيَّ، دَعَا النَّبِيَّ لِعُرْسِهِ، فَكَانَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ خَادِمَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَهْىَ الْعَرُوسُ‏.‏ فَقَالَتْ مَا تَدْرُونَ مَا أَنْقَعْتُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَنْقَعْتُ لَهُ تَمَرَاتٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فِي تَوْرٍ‏.‏

She said that she had made a special syrup for Allah's Apostle by soaking some dates in water in a bowl overnight. This hadith teaches us about hospitality and generosity as it shows how Abu Usaid As Sa'idi welcomed the Prophet into his home with open arms and served him with something special he had prepared for him. It also teaches us about being humble as it shows how even though Abu Usaid As Sa'idi was hosting an important guest like the Prophet, he still took part in serving him himself instead of delegating this task to someone else.
