Prophet Muhammad's Bedtime and Wake-up Prayers

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the words Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to say when he went to bed and when he woke up.

Narrated Hudhaifa: When the Prophet went to bed, he would say: "Bismika amutu wa ahya". and when he got up he would say:" Al-hamdu li l-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihin-nushur".
حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ رِبْعِيِّ بْنِ حِرَاشٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ‏"‏‏.‏ وَإِذَا قَامَ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ ‏"‏‏.‏ تُنْشِرُهَا: تُخْرِجُهَا.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates the words that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to say before going to bed and after waking up. When going to bed, he would recite “Bismika amutu wa ahya” which translates as “In Your name I die and live”. After waking up, he would recite “Alhamdulillahil ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilaihin nushur” which translates as “All praise is due to Allah who gave us life after He caused us death and unto Him is the resurrection”. These words are an expression of gratitude for Allah's blessings of life and death. They also serve as a reminder that all things come from Allah alone; He gives life and takes it away whenever He wills. It also serves as an encouragement for people to be thankful for their lives no matter what situation they are in or how difficult it may be because ultimately everything comes from Allah alone.
