Prophet Muhammad's Bedtime Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prayer that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite before going to bed and after waking up.

Narrated Hudhaifa: When the Prophet went to bed at night, he would put his hand under his cheek and then say, "Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya," and when he got up, he would say, "Al-Hamdu lil-lahi al-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilaihi an-nushur".
حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه قَالَ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ تَحْتَ خَدِّهِ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ ‏"‏ اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا ‏"‏‏.‏ وَإِذَا اسْتَيْقَظَ قَالَ ‏"‏ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates the prayer that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to recite before going to bed and after waking up. Before going to bed, he would put his hand under his cheek and say "Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya" which translates as "O Allah, with Your Name I die and I live". After waking up, he would say "Al-Hamdu lil-lahi al-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana, wa ilaihi an-nushur" which translates as "All praise is due to Allah who gave us life after He made us die, and unto Him is the resurrection". This hadith teaches us the importance of praising Allah for His blessings upon us such as giving us life even after death. It also encourages us to be grateful for all of our blessings in life by thanking Allah for them every day.
