The Superior Way of Asking Forgiveness from Allah

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah and how it can lead to Paradise.

Narrated Shaddad bin 'Aus: The Prophet said, "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta. Khalaqtani wa ana 'Abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa Wa'dika mastata'tu abu'u Laka bi ni 'matika wa abu'u Laka bidhanbi; faghfirli fa'innahu la yaghfiru-dh-dhunuba ill a ant a. A'uidhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu'. If somebody recites this invocation during the night, and if he should die then, he will go to Paradise (or he will be from the people of Paradise). And if he recites it in the morning, and if he should die on the same day, he will have the same fate".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah. It is narrated by Shaddad bin 'Aus that Prophet Muhammad said that if someone recites this invocation during the night, and if he should die then, he will go to Paradise. Similarly, if someone recites it in the morning and dies on the same day, they will have a similar fate. The invocation is as follows; “Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta. Khalaqtani wa ana 'Abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa Wa'dika mastata'tu abu'u Laka bi ni'matika wa abu'u Laka bidhanbi; faghfirli fa'innahu la yaghfiru dh dhunuba ill a ant a. A’uidhu bika min sharri ma sana’tu” which translates to “O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all evil which I have done or committed against myself". This hadith teaches us about seeking forgiveness from Allah through sincere repentance in order to attain salvation in this life and hereafter. It also encourages us to be mindful of our actions so we do not commit sins that would require us seeking forgiveness in the first place.
