Sahih al-Bukhari 6342 (Book 80, Hadith 39) #6093
Invoking Allah for Rain and Withholding It

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ was able to invoke Allah for rain and withhold it from the people of Medina.

Narrated Anas: While the Prophet was delivering a sermon on a Friday, a man stood up and said, "O Allah's Messenger ! Invoke Allah to bless us with rain". (The Prophet invoked Allah for rain) So, the sky became overcast and it started raining till one could hardly reach one's home. It kept on raining till the next Friday when the same man or another man got up and said (to the Prophet), "Invoke Allah to withhold the rain from us, for we have been drowned (with heavy rain )". The Prophet said, "O Allah! Let it rain around us and not on us". Then the clouds started dispersing around Medina and rain ceased to fall on the people of Medina.

QUICK LESSONS:
Turn to God in times of need or difficulty; Be thankful when your prayers are answered; Remember that all blessings come from Him alone; Have faith in God's power; Trust in God's will .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the power of prayer and supplication. It tells us that when we ask Allah for something, He will answer our prayers if it is in accordance with His will. In this case, a man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to invoke Allah for rain, and his prayer was answered as it started raining heavily until people could hardly reach their homes. Then another man asked the Prophet to withhold the rain from them as they were already drowned with heavy rain, so he invoked Allah again and this time He withheld the rain from them by making clouds disperse around Medina but not on them. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah in times of need or difficulty because He is All-Powerful and can answer our prayers if it is in accordance with His will. We should also be thankful when our prayers are answered as we should remember that all blessings come from Him alone.
